Car Accident Injuries

In 2005 alone there were an estimated 6.4 million accidents involving cars, and of those accidents, nearly 3 million people in total initiated insurance claims for injuries sustained. Around the world, there are tens of thousands of accidents each and every day, and while some of the most violent accidents can cause serious injury or even death, even light accidents can cause not only physical injuries, but also mental injuries that prevent people from getting back behind the wheel.

By far the most common injury incurred in car accidents is whiplash. Whiplash is an injury that occurs when the soft tissue of the spine is stretched and strained after a sudden forceful motion. Even in seemingly light accidents, whiplash can occur as your head is knocked around either from a frontal, rear or side impact causing a sudden change in motion. Generally it is caused because your head keeps moving, while your body remains (relatively) stationary in an accident.

Another very common injury sustained in car accidents is head trauma. The human head weighs on average between 4.5 and 5kgs. That is a huge weight for the neck to support and in the event of an accident, there is a high chance that the violent motion changes prevalent in car accidents will cause the head to come into contact with some materials inside the vehicle. When the head is subjected to a violent impact, the chances of brain trauma being sustained are quite high.

Upper limb damage is also very common in car accidents. Cuts and bruises are almost always experienced in accidents, especially with side impact accidents and any cabin protrusions. It is said that even though airbags help to reduce the chances of serious head injuries occurring, many people now experience severe burns on the inside of their arms due to the explosions that enable to airbag to deploy in an accident.

Depending on the type of impact, lower limb injuries are also common, especially in side impact accidents. If a vehicle has a severe impact from the side, it can cause the thighs and legs damage from coming into contact with the doors, and pedals. Unfortunately, due to the enclosed design of most vehicles, serious accidents can cause lower limbs to become trapped, sometimes causing extreme blood loss, especially if an artery is damaged.
