Dealing With The Frustration Of Writer’s Block

Self Help and Motivational Add comments

This happens to everyone that ventures into the writing field. You might be a professional with deadlines. You may be writing a great work of literature. There will be times when you sit down and nothing happens. Many people have ways to deal with this, when it occurs. Some techniques are effective. Some are not. Here are some things to try when you seem to draw a blank.

Exercise

Get up from your desk and move around a bit. Do some things about the house. Take your Dyson all floors vacuum out and start cleaning. Take out the trash. Do anything to remove yourself from writing. You may get some nice ideas, and you will get things done.

Break time

After a few minutes, it is time to quit fighting it. You may only increase your frustration. Try something completely different. Take a short nap. Watch a DVD movie or television program. A few minutes of this, may be just what you need.

Notes

Keep a notebook with you to write down ideas as they occur. You may be fixing dinner. Perhaps you are setting your child in his Graco Snugride infant car seat. Ideas come at the most inopportune times. Be prepared for them.

Get a routine

A regular routine is a great way to start creative juices flowing. Try to come up with some simple things. Maybe you will have a cup of coffee or tea. Perhaps you will close your eyes and see yourself as a famous writer. These things will help you associate them with your writing.

Just write

Does nothing else seems to work? Sit down and begin to write. It does not matter what, just write. If you are at a complete loss, look around the room. Look in the newspaper. You may see something like a Singapore promotion. Begin writing about tourism and travel. You may wonder what travel has to do with your current subject. It may have nothing at all to do with it. The idea, is to do something that you are familiar with. This may start things moving in your mind.

Conclusion

If you are a writer, you will eventually run out of ideas. Do not worry, there is an endless supply. Give yourself time to reload your idea inventory. Do something totally unrelated to your writing. Rest for a few minutes or watch television. Get some exercise and do some household chores. Take a notebook with you, wherever you go. If nothing works, sit down and write on any subject that you can. Something will come to you, eventually.
